Savannah makes us smile
Cheers for October and all that it brings! Fall weather to cool us down, the start to some colorful trees, though just bits scattered about, and the feeling of summer coming to an end to make way for boots, scarves, and cool breezes to make us smile while we walk around.
It's becoming a tradition for us to visit our favorite city at least once a year, and though we've yet to go in Summer, we can't imagine a fall without Savannah, Georgia. Have you been? What were your favorite spots?
After leaving early morning (and I mean like 3:00am) we arrived in Savannah around 8am just in time to celebrate our arrival with breakfast at Spanky's on the river. Okay, so Spanky's is a bar and it's not exactly the most dainty beautiful breakfast you've ever laid eyes on but for about $4 a plate and some oddly delicious "spuds" you get a great about of food and a great view of the river while being right in the middle of all the coolest places on the river side, as well as a little open market that sets up right outside.
How do we vacation so much being full time working adults with entirely too many bills to pay? We don't go for the most expensive and well-known places we hear about.
Another little fun add-on to why we love Spanky's: the last time we went with a group for breakfast (after a long night of entirely too many to-go drinks) was the cook shared his little bit of history of growing up with the owner and how Savannah meant so much to him and it makes him so happy to see "young people" enjoying it the ay he once did. See? Not the fanciest, but who needs fancy when you have great little stories to attach to your dining experience?
Aside from breakfast, our Savannah trip tends to revolve around two things: the beautiful city and the endless ability to drink and enjoy yourself. There are so many beautiful squares to look at and walk through during the day. The city itself screams history and I think the fall time, right around Halloween really brings the spooky ghostly history to life. Then at night when you've had your fill of looking around and need to rest your feet, hit up some bars and enjoy the surroundings.
Our favorite bar that we HAVE to visit is Savannah Smiles. There's a $5 cover charge but it's the best place you'll ever spend a cover charge on. Dueling pianos and the best show you can see! From singing Bon Jovi to Garth Brooks, you'll hear all of the greatest bar song singalongs all in one place with the occasional weird request that makes your drunken heart smile. Even if you're not a drinker, it's a great place to people watch and you might find yourself singing right along when they play "Friends in low places" which is one of our personal favorites.
